　　1972年，纽约时报记者辛尼在柬埔寨采访，柬埔寨人潘迪是他的翻译兼助手，两人在战火纷飞中结下了深厚的友谊。1975年，红色高棉占领金边，辛尼进入法国领事馆后安全撤退，潘迪因为没有护照而被捕。潘迪在柬共的劳动改造政策中历经劫难，目睹了红色高棉政权的残暴血腥，1978年，越共入侵柬埔寨，潘迪趁机逃亡到泰国边境，与一直在寻找他的老朋友辛尼重逢。

　　电影中，最让人令人不寒而栗，头皮发麻的一幕是，DithPran试图逃跑，经过“人骨河”，不小心掉进河中，抓着一具具的人骨才爬上岸！更触目惊心的那些在PolPot(波尔布特)统治下，幼小孩子思想被洗脑后，那些凶恶的眼神，看不到一丝善良，是那种比冰更冷的眼神。他们/她们举枪、挥刀杀人，毫不手软。该影片获得三项奥斯卡金奖(1985)。DithPran的扮演者是华裔医生吴汉。吴汉原是柬埔寨红色高棉恐怖统治时代的华侨医生，他逃过赤棉的血腥大屠杀，辗转流亡美国。一九八四年好莱坞拍摄电影《杀戮战场》，吴汉因缘际会在片中轧上一角，饰演为美国媒体工作的柬埔寨摄影记者，由于角色诠释刻画入微，一炮而红，获奥斯卡最佳男配角奖。

花絮

·男配角斯波尔丁·格雷写了一场独角戏，是关于他在拍摄这部电影的经历，随后根据这个拍成了另一部电影Swimming to Cambodia(1987)。

·吴汉(Haing S. Ngor)成为第一位东南亚(也是第一位佛教教徒)获得奥斯卡奖的演员。

·电影中的可口可乐工厂原来设想的是一家百事可乐工厂，后来百事拒绝了出现在影片中。

·在奥斯卡颁奖典礼上，当吴汉(HaingS.Ngor)赢得最佳男配角奖的时候，他在十五岁侄女的陪伴下走上领奖台。就在这个时候，约翰·马尔克维奇开玩笑地大笑起来，对他说了一些柬埔寨语，令他的侄女大吃一惊，吴汉也笑了起来。约翰喊道："这个奖项属于我的，屁股！"在吴汉的自传中，他说约翰·马尔克维奇学习柬埔寨骂人的脏话，兴趣十分浓厚。

穿帮镜头
